Radio Advert

To begin my newspaper advert i first looked into researching newspaper adverts to see what connventions were normal for a newspaper advert, however while investigating i could not seem to find a single newspaper advert not even for nation or global newspapers such as news of the world.

Although, after visting  http://www.radioville.co.uk/ and listening to some of the radio adverts they have produced has given me some idea of normal conventions of a radio advert.

Analysis

From investigating these radio adverts it has given me an idea of what i need to include such as a strong accent and an a simple script that informs individuals of the reason why an individual would by the Portishead Press.

To get an isight in to what type of information a real newspaper would want to include i took the time to analysis a recent advert by the Sun although this isn't a local newspaper it does provide me with an insight into what an newspaper would wish to promote about their newspaper.

In this advert they have got a young girl roughly around the age of 6, for the whole advert the girl is sing about the things that are wrong with January such as the weather, no money, going back to work and weight gain. Then at the end of the advert they inform the reader about the point of the advert which is a chance of winning a range of free holidays which can solve a few of the issues that were mentioned.

Questionnaire

After choosing my idea for my newspaper poster, i wanted to carry out some audience research to see the types of jobs that my target audience would be intrested in. For this i carryed out a small scale queationnaire that i include some open and closed questions, so i could be informed about the types of jobs the readers would wish to be invloved leading to them to buy my newspaper.

The first question i asked my sample was which genda they were to help identify which type of gender i should include in my images.

This bar chart suggest that out my small sample of 18 individuals their was an response of 10 males and 8 females. I did send out more questionnaires however their was only have the amount that provided feedback, anyway this shows that my sample were fairly equal with the genda therefore i will be including a mixture of genda in my images for my poster.

The next querry i had was to discover the occupation of  my sample to help me see what jobs i should be advertising are included in the newspaper.

From the pie chart i can identify four main sections that my samples jobs fit into business such as construction manager, adiminastrater, graphic desinger and making microsoft software. Care sector such as care work, dentail nurse and teacher assisent, labour which constited of a gaderner, carpanteer  lastly there was the section that did not have an occupation due to either being a house wife or retired.

The last question i asked my sample was which job would they be carrying out in their ideal world to discover which type of occupation they would be looking to take up.

This pie chart suggest that they were roughly the same sectors as before however there has been an addded sector of personal fittness.

Newspaper Billboard.

Newspaper Billboard

This is a newspaper poster to advertise the star newspaper, they have included the slogan that they put on the top of the newspaper in black bold writing. The image they have included is one of their own newspapers folded up in a paper aeroplane which relates to one of their cover lines ' support the RAF Oxford Air Show'.
Underneath the image they have included a sentence of what they included in their newspaper and the reason to buy the Star.  Then they have got an image of their newspaper folded at the bottom so the reader can recognise the newspaper. They have used an silver background that washes out into a white background.
The Press is a local newspaper which has done a poster to advertise and raise awareness of the newspaper. At the top of the poster they have included the masthead that they use on their newspaper. They have also included the logo in the same position as they have in the newspaper. They have got a large image of candles which people associate with special occasions. They used this image because they are advertising the success of the press of being published for 150 years. In the background they have used a large image of a newspaper story and lightened the image were the candles are present.
At the very bottom they have included a joke and the companies name who comes up with these jokes that they have to produce a difficult joke on page 4 in each newspaper they produce.
They have also used an image of the printed copy of the newspaper to make the reader aware of what they are trying to advertise.

The metro is a local newspaper that have created a poster to advertise there product against competitors.  The poster has an image that covers the whole background of a man in a suit that would be associated with business. In the image the business man is holding an purple book that appears to be an book that somebody of high intelligence would use on a regular bases. In side of the book they have slipped a folded up copy of their newspaper to suggest that these type of individuals are who them aim their newspaper at.
In the bottom right conner they have placed the website of the newspaper so individuals can learn more about the newspaper by going on to the website and they are displaying the companies use technological convergence.
The main text on the poster is the slogan 'Your dirty little secret....' which is included on each issue of the metro. For this slogan they have used the same type of font they use for their newspaper masthead this could be because that font is known by local people as the metro's font therefore when they see that font they know it is the metro.
Lastly they have placed their masthead 'metro' at the bottom left hand coroner in the same formate it would be displayed on the newspaper this is so people are aware of the brand that is advertising their newspaper.

The i newspaper have done two individuals posters that look very similar, the main image of the poster is the masthead of the newspaper 'i' which has been placed in the centre of the poster in a very well large font. They have also included their logo of a type of bird in the same formate as it is placed on the actual newspaper, they have also positioned it in the same place around the masthead as it is on the newspaper.  This could be because they want to build up an audience that are aware of their newspaper. On the masthead they have included what they i offers individuals such as 'sport, opinion, ideas, jobs etc they have done this so people are aware of what they will receive for their money.
At the bottom right hand side they have included their slogan of 'it's a red letter day! i is all you need' this is also included in the front of the newspaper.

The metro have created another poster to advertise their newspaper however this time it has a more simple and informal feel towards the newspaper. They have placed a block colour of  bright blue for the background. For the cover image they have used what seems to be a cartoon newspaper being opened. They have then added a red steps which are normally founded on the side of public swimming pools.

The way they have made the newspaper look like a swimming pool links to their main cover line of 'Dip IN' where they suggest that the metro have good content that their target audience would be able to pick up the metro and be able to read for a long time.

The colour scheme they have used for this poster is blue, red and white which is the same colour scheme for the newspaper itself this create continuity for the customer.

At the bottom the poster they have placed the masthead of the newspaper in the same font and colours, they have done this so the audience are aware that this advertisement is for the metro.

The metro have created another poster to advertise their newspaper however this time they have used an image of a women eating her breakfast however instead of her eating cereal in the image she is eating the words. This shows that she is eating knowledge that she will gain through reading the metro. They have used a background of plain cream and placed the women on top, the women is dressed in a natural clothes.
She has been positioned in a stance as if she is eating her breakfast, on the spoon they have put facts on as in she is going to digest them.
They have placed a slogan on the top left hand corner of 'news that will feed your mind'  which matches with the cover image. The slogan is suggesting that the metro contains data that you will find useful in later life and you will find your knowledge being developed each time you read it. They have done the slogan in blocked capitals which makes the statement seem that it is a fact.

Readership Of Local Newspapers

Readership Of Local Newspapers

Readership is the total number of primary readers of a publication, this is a key measurement of a sucess of a newspappers. As the populatrity of newspapers have reduced over time due to other technology i would aspect to find the readerrship figures to also fall.

Readership Figures

The Daily Mail in June and December 2011 on average had an readership appoximatley of 4.371 million which sound alot however the Audit Bureau Readership figures shows and decrease of 1.82% each year.

The Nottingham Post in 2012 has a weekley readership of 329,512 compared to its readership it 2009 515,344 is a slight decline that if contines could be bad news for the newspaper.

The Impact of Newspapers

The Impact Of Newspapers

As time goes on technology develops and new methods of media are becoming a part of regular life that makes information more accessible for the consumer. At one time newspapers would have been the main way for the public to access information meaning that the local newspapers would have had a big impact on the local community because they would rely on the newspaper to find out what has been happening.

In 2012 newspapers do not have much impact on the community because the information can be discovered with many other methods of media so the consumer doesn't have to rely on a newspaper. Additionally the other methods of medias can be free for the individual or they pay for the equipment to do something else and may as well use it for other things.

Other Forms of media
* Television    *Smart Phones       *Ipods    * Games Conicals
* Internet      *Ipad               *Social Networking Sites

Circulation Droping

The Evening Post in 1962 had a circulation of 160,000 but in 2011 have a circulation 0f 32,996 which has decreased by 128,114 meaning they have lots over a third of their circulation.

While looking for each individual newspapers circulations figures i came across a table that showed the circulation figures from 2000 to 2012 and clearly identifies a dramatic fall eaach year.

Institutions and professional bodies

Institutions/ownership and readership

In media institution is the people that have a role in the production of media texts. This covers lots of people the key people are:
*Companies
*Producers
*Distribution
*marketing
*editors
*directors
*producers
*writers

Professional bodies regulate newspapers

Professional bobies have a big influence in the way newspapers are produces because they set the laws and legislation that all local newspaper have to follow to not get in trouble, they help to protect the public's human rights be broken. It is important that they set the laws and legislations so the newspaper institutions are aware of what they can include in their newspapers and what they will get into trouble for. It also is key that the professional bodies maintain their laws other wise newspapers will break the law and the public will not be protected.

The Post

The Post

The Post was a newspaper that was founded in 1932 by owners of the Times and Echo Baron Camrose and The Evening World Lord Rorthmere which were the three main newspapers in the Bristol area at that time. They decided to put all the best eliminates of their newspapers together and called it The Evening Post.

In 1935 The Evening Post was published as a morning and an evening paper and in 1962 their evening competitor Evening World was closed down due to the type of stories they were including which caused The Evening Posts circulation increased to 160,000.

In April 2012 the papers circulation dropped to 32,996 which caused it to be renamed to 'The Post' to reflect the fact that they have dropped the evening edition and the Saturday edition.

Offers

Offers
Local newspapers seem to included a offer to encourage individuals to buy the paper. I have examined some local newspapers to find some offers that they have included in their front page and second page.
 The Times
The times has left the left corner of their newspaper for  an offer. They have done an offer for half price waxing by a local beautician. They have done one coloured background and because the majority of their customer are females they have used the colour pink which is associated with girls. They have used a nice delinquent font that makes the advert look stylish but genital.
 The Weston Daily Press
The Weston Daily Press had left a strip at the bottom of their page for an offer. The offer they had chosen was for a trip on a train were you go on a scenic journey and  have a meal on board. They have done a simple offer of a picture of the train on the left hand side then the important information like times, dates , cost etc in the orange background. Then they have done terms and conditions in the white background section.
The Post
The post have included an offer of a national business the AA that with this coupon code you can get breakdown cover cover from £35.  They have used a big picture as their background with the only colour being  the van so immediately our eyes are draw towards it. The largest font they have used is for the price however below the picture they have done a big box which includes all of the terms and conditions which takes up a third of the advert.

Adverts

Adverts

While doing my research i discovered that most local newspapers have advertisement for business in the surrounding area.

The first advert i happened to come across was an advert for spec savers that allowed the reader to get an eye test worth £5. The picture is not very clear but the background is pale green which is the companies colour. They have used a large blocked font for the offer to make sure that it is noticed by the reader. They have included some terms and conditions in small font underneath.

The next advert i found was to inform individuals about a wedding fair that is going on around their area. They have used a picture of the bride and groom kissing which is the most famous part of a wedding. They have used the colour purple which is suppose to represent success maybe with their marriage. They have done a modern font that has flicks at the end of the letters. This advert has a stylish feel to it because the reader is going to be judging the type of products they do there by the appearance of the advert.

The next advert that caught my attention was Majestic Coach Holiday's. They are advertising for one of their routes through France. They have only used black and white which made it fade into the page however they have been clever with how they have done it. They used the colour black to create themselves a border, and boxes for key information they want to stand out. The only images they have used is a small beer glass and a television to go with their promotion of a 99p bar. From the fact that they have highlighted the pricing and bars i would say they are going for a target audience of  C2 and D that are elderly.

The Times has the same three adverts for about a month, one being this company that fit doors into peoples homes. They have done a simple advert by using images of their products in the background. They have then used some bold and bright font put diagonally across the image. At the bottom they have included their companies logo for reader to recognise and the telephone number for them to get hold of the company.

This advert is another one from the times. This advert is promoting a business that fix garage doors on peoples homes. They have also got a simple design by have one background colour which they have chosen yellow with black writing. They have used the largest font for their title which cleverly is also their website for the business therefore they save space. Directly under they have listed everything that the business can do. Then they have used three picture of garages that they have fitted or repaired successfully. For the pictures they have done diffrent angles on each picture so the reader can see each side. They have then included their adress of the shop. The largest thing on the advert is the telephone number for people to call to ask questions.

The last advert that is included in the times is about a carpet shop in nailsea. They are promoting there rug sale they are having currently. They have used two pictures of their products that would be in the sale with the percentage of discount you will recive. They have then done a banner with the amount of time left untill they go back to normal price. They done their font in yellow which makes it stand out on the page because it is all white, black and dark purple. They have uncluded the types of rugs they have in the sale. Lastly they have included their adress and telephone number.

In the Weston Daily Press i found an advert for family lawyers that deal with divorces. This advert is unusual in the way it does not included a picture but this is down to the  nature of the business. However they have also not included any colour maybe because it is an upsetting topic therefore they don't want to make the advert happy and bright. They have given themselves a border with curved edges which i think gives it a bit of a style rather than just writing. They are informing individuals that they can have an free interview to review their situation.

Page 1 Of The Post

The Page 1 Of The Post
The Post has decided to do a double page spread over page 1 and 2. On page 1 of their double page spread they have split into three sections.
On the left hand side they have done a big story of an bomb fright in Cabot Circus in Bristol that was the day before the post was published. They have four small picture of the inconvenience it caused to Bristol's day life.  Then in the centre they have a bigger picture of a police officer putting the bomb out showing how serious it was.

Then at the top right they have their main storey of page 1&2 which is about a Bristol solider that was killed while on duty in Afghanistan and his body has return to Bristol for funnel. They have used the biggest font and in their they have done alliteration of the letter B with Bristol, body, back and Briton. The alliteration give the title an empathises on the fact a local person has died fighting and is being flown back for his funnel. It also creates a bit of rhyme causing the storey to become remembered more. They have used a large  picture of soldiers caring his coffin with an British flag over this resembles how important the job is that he was doing and proud his colleges are of him. They have also included a small picture of him in his uniform just so everyone can put a face to the name because it is easier to sympathise if the reader is aware of what the individual looks like.

Lastly at the bottom they have done a storey on fans missing part of the Bristol City game due to bad traffic. That they are going to finish on a later page.

Page 1 of The Weston Daily Press

Page 1&2 Of The Weston Daily Press
This is page 1 of The Weston Daily Press. On the left hand side they have given a summary of what the newspaper includes and were the reader can find the story. They have also put the stories into sub sections of individuals interests like sport, farming, charity ect.
On the right hand side they have included a line of three small stories that are national. They didn't include any pictures and they just summarised they stories.
In the centre they have their main stories of the page which is carried on from their front page of a local man who killed his best friend. They have include a small storey of the friend who got killed because on the front page they have a picture of the killer.
Lastly they have done a story on the bottom of a local carer that stole from their client and spend the money on a night out with friends. They have not included any pictures in this story which represents the serious the story has.

Page 1 &2 Of The Times

Page 1&2 Of The Times

Page 1
Page 1 of the Bristol times is split into 4 sections, down the left side they have a noticeboard that provides individuals with the contact details of each council in North somerset. They have also included Clevdons tide table to allow everyone to know when it is safe to go on the beach or not.

At the top they have got a very colourful advert for the website of the newspaper providing advertisment for themselves. They have done it as the brightest part of the page so people notice it. They also have used large font that can be clearly read for the website so nobody makes mistakes.

Then they have their main storey with the largest title which was to do with the town council giving lots of money to sporting activities due to the Olympics. With these stories they have done a unusual lot of writing.

Lastly they have done a fourth storey about young children enjoying sports and they have been given medals at school which links with their main storey. This storey has a large picture of children in their casual clothes looking relaxed and enjoying school.

Page 2
On their page they have split into 3 section, the first being a big picture of a teddy bears picnic at Nailsea pre-school with a little message say good luck at big school. The photographer has gone for a classic school photo but with the children sat down with their bears.

Their second story is to do with an on going story in the times about a skate park being allowed to open in Portishead. Finally they have been given the punish to open it so they have been given a bigger section of the papper. They have included a small picture with the owners and a few teenage boys who are their target audience with their bikes looking really happy. They have taken the picture outside the hopeful location.

The Times have also put a board round the edge of advertisement for local business providing the newspaper with a source of income and supporting the local business.

Page 1&2 Of The Bromely Mail

Page 1&2 Of A Newspaper

This image is of page 1 and 2 of the Bromley Mail, they have chosen to do a double page spread of one main story in the top centre about a local hero that has gone out of his way to improve the local travel for his daughters generation. They have done the title 'The Local Campion' which announces that the family man has been successful in his fight for better transport. They have used the largest font for this title of the whole page which tells you that the story is the most relevant to the people that live in Bromely. For the main storey they have also add a background colour of deep blue that makes the story stand out but it also blends into the picture. To contrast the blue they have used an gold colour for the title maybe to symbolise the fact that he has been successful in his actions.

In the main story, they have done a huge picture of the man with his wife and kids in what looks like their family home. The photographer has put the dad in a position of leaning of his daughter as if he is protecting her like he is in the story. The picture slightly over laps causing them to have a short title and the summary at the top has had to be in smaller font so they don't touch each other.

At the bottom left hand side they have done a small story about Bromley's environmental plans for the future. They're are having an debate of what is for the best so they are just up dating their readers on the progress of the local environment.

At the bottom on the middle they have used an image to go with a national story about a discovery they have made about Queen Marry. The image they have used of 3 male leaning over a computer as if they are looking at the research that they have found. The man are dressed in suit to show that they have some sort of authority and are important to the local community.

In the top right hand corner they have done an update of local news that can quickly be read and will be relevant to everybody because it will change the community.

Questionnaire results

Questionnaire Results

Question 1: What gender are you?

This question makes people aware that my sample was not totaly a fair reprsentation of newspaper readers because from the people i asked the majority were males. However from my results it suggests that more males reader newspapers maybe due to the cotent because traditionally the males would sort out the day to day life of the family motor section, business, sports section ect.

Question 2: What age are you?

This question was added so it could be seen what life stage my sample were, i tried to add a mixture of age groups however i asked more under 21's and they did not both to fill out my questionnaire beacuse they do not read newspapers. From my questionnaire it could be assumed that more people aged 61+ read newspapers maybe because that is what they were brought up with or making a big steryotype they would be retierd and have the time to buy and read the newspaper.

Question 3:HoW oFtEn Do yOu ReAd A nEwSpApEr ?

I added this question because i wanted to find out wether newspapers were a large part of peoples everyday life or if they hardly noticed they were there. From my results i can see that the majortity of people read newspaper once a week so they aren't the most form of media but they are still used.

Question 4: Which media would you perfer your information is given?

Now i have found out how often a newspaper is read i decided to see what form of media my sample preferred to be informed. The television and newspaper which came out on the top are the most traditional forms of media used to tell infoormation. I belive that people like reading a newspaper because that is what they have been brought up with.

Question 5: What newspaper do you read?

Question 6: WHAT ELEMENTS MAKE A NEWSPAPER GOOD?

Question 7:Would you base your opinion on the newspaper on the front page?

Fonts and Titles

Newspaper Fonts

Traditional fonts

The traditional fonts origante from the same time newspapers were created they have thick black letters with harsh bold edges. The fonts reprsent the writting that would be possbile to creat while using a quill that was the only writting apperater used when newspapers were created.

Modern Fonts

The modern fonts are very diffrent compared to the traditional fonts by the way the letters flow into each other smoothly giving an more informal impression to the newspaper.

The Masthead
Each newspaper has an individual brand name that makes it easier for an individual to tell the difference between each newspaper. The Evening Post chose their name because it is a daily newspaper that originally people were able to buy in the evening. Know the Evening Post is more established they do an morning evening post but they shows this to their readers by the amount of stares on the front page. They have got a mixture of traditional and modern font is beacuse the newspaper feels are if they want to remeber all of the history Bristol has gone through but also are excited about the future for the city. They have included a smybol into their brand name that represents a bit of Bristols history because Bristol harbour was used due in the slave trade.

The local newspaper for yorkshire is the Yorkshire Post this has got its tittle by telling the reader exactly what it is so there would be no confusion about what the newspaper includes. They have used the word Yorkshire because it tells the reader that this is their local newspaper, they have included the word post to tell the reader what kind of information the newspaper is going to included. They have used a more traditonal font with big black lines and harsh staight edges.

The Times is also a local newspaper to Bristol, the word Times relates to the fact that the information in the newspaper is current to the area and is up to date. They have used traditional fonts with sharp edges and thick black letters. The Times have also included an tradional smybol of a lion and a unicorn with the queens crown on the top.

Research Into Newspapers

 Research Into Newspapers

After looking into music videos and newspapers I decided that I wanted to do my media course work on newspapers because i am interested in finding out the local, national and international news. I always watch the news on the television but have never read it in a newspaper so the first thing i did was to go out and buy three different types of newspapers.

Sunday Express
The Sunday Express is an English language weekly newspaper that is published in Montreal and was launched in 1918. The Sunday Express includes national stories covering the royal family, celebrities, dating tips, sport and activities like crosswords.

The Guardain
The Guardain is a British national daily newspaper which circulates worldwide, containing articles from the its pairing newspaperThe Observer, as well as reports, features and book reviews from the Washington post  and articles translated from Le Monte.
The mirror
The mirror is a British national daily tabloid newspaper which was founded in 1903. The newspaper contains celebrity news, sports, money issues and general gossip. When it was launched in November 1903 it was run by women for women but scene has been adapted for a mixed gender audience and employees.
