Radio Advert

After conducting the analysis i have discovered the normal conventions of a radio advert and and a newspaper television advert, therefore for my newspapers radio advert i am going to mix them together.

Planning 

Aim of the advert
My first aim is to display all of the opportunities in occupations that Portishead Press are providing their readers with.
My other aim to show that the newspaper is a relaxing experience and provided you with knowledge.

Idea 1 
My first idea is to include typical noises that would be heard when an individual is getting ready for work. After you hearing them rushing their is a rewinding noise that takes the individual back to the start of the day when they sit down and read and they read the portishead press.

Idea 2 

My second idea is that an individual steps into work and their boss asks them about a topic related to their job that has been in the news recently. The worker is clueless and the boss isn't impressed that the individual isn't doing external reading into the area of work. Then it rewinds and the worker starts his day again but this time they read the Portishead Press and find about about the topic, then when the boss ask the worker is full of ideas about the topic.

Idea 3

My third idea is that an individual gets up to go to work isn't happy about it, doesn't enjoy their job, then when they read the Portishead Press they find the perfect job that they had been hoping for. 

Audience Feedback    

Kayla- 'My preferred idea is number 2 because it is quite detailed and it provides you with the confidence that the newspaper will benefit you in some way.' 

Harrit- 'I think that the nosies from idea 1 would make the newspaper advert sound more interesting, and would relate to your audience because they would be of the age were they do have jobs. 

Sasja- ' The second idea is the best for me because it suggests that the newspaper would be worth the time reading' 

Holly- 'The second and third are more helpful for showing the unique selling point of the newspaper of providing lots of jobs.' 

With my audiences feedback in mind i have decided to go on with idea 2 because it was the most popular among the age ranges. However i am slightly going to change it to incorporate some of the noises from idea number 1 other wise their wont be any music in my advert which would be breaking the conventions of a real radio advert.

Designs For Poster

For my poster i have conducted some research into newspaper posters that exist however i found it difficult to find newspaper posters therefore i do not have much to base my newspaper poster design on.

For my first design I decided that there were some key features that i would need to include such as the masthead of my newspaper 'Portishead Press' so individuals are aware of the brand which is being advertised.  

For the idea of my poster i decided to use the unique selling point of this particular issue of Portidheads Press, this was the fact that they were advertising a wide range of jobs in the newspaper so i am going to use this to promote my newspaper.





Constructing My Poster 
I started my newspaper poster by selecting a new A4 page on the computer program Indesign, i then created a layer named background, for this i wanted to make the background white so i used the square shaped tool to create a box over the area i wished and coloured it in white.

After creating the background i had to figure out a way to incorporate my masthead from my newspaper because from my research i discovered that all newspaper posters include their masthead, in the same formate as displayed on my newspaper. For this i created a new layer in which i imported the same masthead as my newspaper, i moved it around the page until i found a position that i thought suited it.

Along with imitating my masthead i also included the same logo that is featured on my health promotion campaign, for this i also created a new layer and name it 'Logo' i then placed it in the same area of between my masthead as shown on my newspaper, these will help for the people to be aware that it is the 'Portishead Press' advertising.

I thought that it looked to much like a document piece of writing, so i need to add some colour and shape to make the poster look more informal. To solve this problem i simple a rectangle tool to create two long  lines, to fit it into my theme of my newspaper i used the same colour scheme of pale blue.

To show my technological convergence i displayed the website for my newspaper so the customers are able to interact with one another through there similarities.      

I then added some writing, to begin with i placed 'Inside the...'  above the masthead so people were clear that the poster doesn't provide all of these factors the newspaper will. I then placed other factors that the newspaper will include such as sport and fashion.  To do this i created a new layer and inserted a text box on to the position of my choice, and simply used the font tool to pick a font of my choice. With this font i changed the hight of the letters so they are higher to match the theme of my masthead font.     

 I then wanted to put a statement that would make it obvious to the reader that the Portishead Press is offering a range of job opportunities in their local newspaper, for this it had to be clear however not to direct because from my research i found that posters seem to include a rhetorical question. 

Ideas

For my ideas i wasn't sure what to go with so i asked some individuals that read local newspapers of questions that would take their attention and make them think about their job.

• Looking for a change ?                                             
• Moving up the career ladder ?
• Need a change in direction ?  

After asking some audience for ideas these are a few that they came up with however i was unsure about which one to use so i asked some friends at school which one they preferred and there was a 50% for Moving up the career ladder and 50% for Need a change in direction, however when i made it clear that my aim to encourage people to explore the different jobs available the percentage changed to 85% for Moving up the career ladder, therefore i decided to use this comment.

I then wanted to make it very clear that my newspaper was advertising a wide range of jobs not just the average 9 to 5 jobs, so people were not put of by the thought of lodes of jobs that they don't like and is similar to the job that they have already got.    

I then looked back at my research and discovered that a majority of posters don't include numbers and only letters therefore i had to change 100's to Hundreds, also i add the information of in tuesdays
edition so the reader doesn't believe that these jobs are in every offer.

I then added the images of individuals going up a step to relate to my phrase 'moving up the career ladder?' however when i carried out some audience research into the design of my poster, it was obvious that their was one main factor that my target audience didn't like. This was the images they thought that they looked cheap and could not see the relation between the statement and the images.  

This made me examine my poster and i could see what my audience were talking about, so to correct it i used the same image as i used to advertise the jobs on my newspaper. I used the gradient tool on indesign to make the image fade at the bottom. I accomplished this by adding a new layer then sending it to the back of my poster, the i have to create a shape on top of the image then use the gradient tool to draw a line of were i wish the image to fade.

After changing my offer to the advert i had to come up with a new offer,i went back through my research and looked at some of the offers i saw. I noticed that all the products they were giving away for the price were new that year and some had not even been released yet. 

I done a thought shower of the latest products that had come out in 2012 and found that their is a large variety of products and some would not be the right product for a local magazine. From my thought shower i found that they product i wanted to use had to be something my target audience would buy as a large purchase not on their everyday lives otherwise i believe it would not get as much interest. 

Due to the fact that my newspaper is going to be a local newspaper to Portishead i thought it would be interesting to see what product they would like to win. I have come up with 5 products i think would be suitable for my newspaper and i am going to give them the products and ask the to circle the one they would prefer (car, smart phones, laptop, 3D television and radio) after then i asked the open question of why.  
 

From my research i discovered that their is two clear winners a car and a smart phone. While analysing the data qualitative data i found that these were the most popular because they are products that are a necessity in the 21st century however their is different brands of these products at different price ranges so my sample thought they could be used regularly but it would be nice to have an product that would normally be out of their price range.

Also while going through the qualitative data i discovered that their was a large difference in the product of choice depending on the life stage the individual is currently going through. I found that if the individual was in late adulthood plus (17 +) then they would choose a car because it is very relevant to their lives and is one of their largest outflows of cash. If the individual was under 17 then driving did not appeal to them because they were legally unable to do it however they felt that the phone you had showed the level of income you had and therefore felt that the better phone they have the better they would look in front of their friends. 

Due to the fact that the average reader is going to be older than 17 i decided that i am going to be doing an offer on a new car. I looked at the possible cars i could and decide to use a small family car because it will apply to more of the readers therefore i am going to use a new ford KA.

The Dance Story

This story is going to be my main story for page 2 which is about a local dance business that are having success. In the image i am going to be using there will be a dance class in the image.

Location 

The location i am going to be using for the dance studio is going to be the local secondary school Gordano because they have got a dance studio that is up to date and in good condition. Also because this is were i go to school there it is available for me to use.

Clothing

The clothing that the class are going to be wearing will be sporting cloths that enable them to be able to move with out be restrict by their clothing.

Shot Type

There is only going to be one image for this story however  it is going to be very large therefore it is important to get it right. The shot size i am going to be using will be LS because i would like to get more than one dancer in the shot. The angle i will be using is going to be slightly high so the image will be looking down on them.

For the bin story i left half column 2 and column 5 then a quarter of column 3 and 4. There is only a quarter for columns 3 and 4 because the other quarter is taken up by the image  i am going to take of bins. The image is going to be of an overflowing bin next to empty recycling bins. 

 

Location 

The  location i am going to be using for this image is the outside of my house at the end of the drive were we normally put our bins out to be collected.

 

Shot Type 

For this image i am going to be an birds eyed view to enable readers to see the rubbish over flowing then have the size of the shot CU.  

The Advert

For the advert that is going to be on page 2 i am going to be promotion a local farm that sell produce in a shop. For this advert i am going to do a pale brown background to fit with the nature of the business. I am going to take an picture of an chickens egg to put in the corner so they can see the products they provide. At the bottom i am going to do a curved line at the bottom and under that curved line there is going to be an image of chickens wondering around to prove that the products are free range. Then there is going to be text that say were the shop is , what they produce and the opening times of the shop.   

 

Location

The location i am going to use for these images are my garden because my mum owns free ranged chickens therefore it is very accessible and i only want ordany chhickens that a farm would own.  I will also take the image of the egg at my house from one of the chickens.   

Shot types

The angle of shot i am going to use for the chickens is going to be eye level and the shot size is going to be MS because i would like to get the grass in the background as well. For the egg i am going to do am going to angle the camra so it will be a high shot and i am going to be doing size XCU to get an extrem close up.

After my first design i thought that i could be improved and consequently have done a plan for my new design.

 

I placed the the first paragraph of this story on the front page with a jump line to be continued on page 2. The location i have given this story is down the first column and have given it two thirds of the page.Half way through the story i am going to be including a picture of the place were the knife was found.

 

Directly under the knife story i have made a area for another advert for local business to advertise and to show my newspaper is going to be supporting local business.

 

 My main story is going to be about a dance studio called the launch that has been opened a few months ago and is been successful.I have left enough room for the headline to use two lines. The image is going to be on the right hand side taking up half of column 5,4,3 making the story go onto two column 2 then the rest of 3,4,5.

 

Then at the bottom of the page i am going to have my story about bins and people not recycling. There is going to be an banner across column 2,3,4 and 5 to make a clear divide between the two two stories. It then it has the rest of column 2,3,4,5 for the story to be written.  

 



The Offer

I have left a whole strip at the top of my newspaper for an offer. I would like to use a local business because it will be local people buying the newspaper. I am going to use a mobile hair dresser i know. I have done a first draft of the offer to show what it will look like. The background is going to be pale purple, then the circles are going to have an image of a hairstyle  front and back. Then there will be the details in the middle. At the right there will be a picture of hairdressing equipment with terms and conditions underneath.

 

Location

I am going to be taking the picture in my kitchen because a mobile hairdresser goes to the customers houses.

 

Shot Type  

For the picture i am going to be using a low shot of  the front but having the size of the shot BCU so the reader can see how the hair has been cut.For the back image i am going to be doing an birds eyed shot to show how shot the layers are but with the image i am going to be doing the size of CU so it is not as concentrated on the hair.

I have left a large amount of my right hand side for an advert which i am going to be making my self.

My Design

                                

To begin with i had to think of what i was going to advertise a business that provides a product or service. I went back through my research and found that there is an pattern in the type of business that advertise in local newspapers. I found that the pattern is that they all are for manual job. With this in mind i thought of all the manual jobs i was aware of that did not already have an advert. In the end i have chosen to do a window fitter.

At the very top i have put the website of the business to make people aware of what they do straight away but also save space. Directly below i have used built points to tell the reader what the business can do for them so there should be no confusion. Then i am going to include three different pictures of windows to show off the work that is possible for them to do.  I am going to then put the address of the shop so readers are knowledgeable about were they could come and ask questions. Then i am going to put the phone number in the largest font on the page because they can make bookings by ringing the number therefore it needs to be noticeable. I am going to do an banner at the bottom with the companies logo and some information.    

 

 

Location 



For each picture i am going to be using a diffrent location because i would like to use a diffrent looking house for each picture so it shows the varity of their work. For one image i will use my own house then for the other two i will use friends houses.

Each picture i am going to do a diffrent type of shot to show  the windows from diffrent angles. One i am going to do a close up that is at eye level,the second is going to be a low shot with a  size of LS. Lastly i am going to do an canted shot to make them all difffrent and this shot is going to be the size of MUC.

This story is an on going story from newspapers before therefore the reason i have included it on my front page is to make people aware their has been a development. I have only given this story a small space enough for a short title and the opening paragraph.

 

Location 

For this story there is not going to be a picture because it would already have been on the front page with a picture and people who read the newspaper every week would get board. However i am going to mention a location in the article which is going to be St Mary's Road which is an woody lane that is not often used.

 Props

I am going to be using a knife that was used to attempt to kill somebody however ended up just injuring them. I am going to use a tea towel to put around it so the killer would have tried to hide it. 

Camera

The angle that i am going to use a slightly high shot so it will be easier for the reader to see the knife and were it was found.The shot size i am going to be doing an CU therefore the knife can be clearly seen but the location is still in included.

For this this story i have given it a small space on the top right hand corner this provides enough space for one picture and a small title. I have not given enough space for a article however i am going to include a jump line to inform readers that the story is developed on another page.

Location

The location i am going to be using for this image is the local secondary school to Portishead.I am currently going to Gordano school sixth form meaning that it makes the place very accessible but in particular i am going to be using an image of the outside of the sixth form building.

 

Clothing  

The head of sixth form is going to be wearing smart formal clothes that they would wear on a day to day bases for their job.

 

Camera

The angle of this image is going to be eye level because i feel as if the audience would want to look at the building as if they were stood there themselves. The size of the shot is going to be LS because i would like to fit in the whole building and the headteacher.

For my Olympic story i had organised a three line space for my heading which meant that i had to play around with fitting it in.Subsequently i found that three lines was the right amount and i plan to use a large font therefore it will need to be spaced out.

 

I have placed the text on top of the story to enable the picture to be larger. Whilst designing my front page i split it up into six columns the left hand side takes up two columns,the image takes up two which left two for the story.   

 

The image i have designed is of the Olympic footballer lent on a local football goal looking very pleased with her self.

 

Location

The location i am going to use for this shot is a local field around the corner from me that has got goal posts. I chose this location because this is were the passion for football would develop while playing with friends at the local park.

 

Clothing

My first idea after creating this story was to have Megan in her Olympic football kit however the kit's you can buy are not exactly the same as the ones the athletes used for their kit's.After discovering this i looked into the english team more closly and found that although they are part of the Olympic team they also are in individual teams like manchester united, chealse, newcastle united. For this reason i thought the next best outfit would be our local team which is Bristol City. 

                                                        

 

Hair and make up

From my research i identified that female sports starts always have their hair up out of their fact so they can concentrate on their sport. For this reason i would like the female to put all her hair up in a small bun therefore it would not distract her. I am going to do this simply by putting all her hair into a ponytail the twisting it around to form a bun. The make up i would like her to be wearing will be very natural almost as if she isn't wearing make up because people don't wear make up while doing sports due to sweating and the make up going into their paws.

 

 

Props

The props i am going to be using in this image is a football which is there for individuals who don't watch football and would not recognise the sport by the outfit.

The other prop is a silver medal that she won from the Olympics. I made the silver medal by getting some purple ribbon sawing it in half then threading it through the medal.

 

 

 

 

 Camera

For this image i am going to be doing a slightly low angled shot to represent the success she has had and the level up she had made in her sport. The size of the shot is going to be MS because i would like Megan to be the centre of the image but also show the surrounding environment to show how normal the place she used to practise was.

After doing my first design i when back through my research and discovered a few issues that had to be changed for my newspaper to fit the normal conventions of newspapers.I created a plan of were everything is going to be placed on my front page.

 

  

 

 

The factors that i had changed was the amount of space i used for the new school building story, i reduced the space by not including an articel to go with the picture but puting a jump line there instead. Additionally i have only included on image of the new building instead of two on my first design.

 

I have added in the first paragraph of the knife story to make people aware their has been an unpdate in the old story however because it is going to be an attemted killing from a few months ago it is not important enough to have all the story on the front page.

 

While looking back through my research i discovered that every local newspaper includes adverts of local business promting individuals to use local business rather than national ones.

 

For my main story i am going to use the same tiltle as my first design' shocked student set's the record straight' however it is going to be a more reccent story of a local student comes back from the Olympics with a silver medal. I have arranged the writting for this story to be place over the image due to space issues.



Design

My Fist Design

I have chosen to do a promotional offer on the top like 2 meals for the price of 1 at a local restaurant to encourage individuals to buy the newspaper. Then underneath i am going to put the masthead so people are aware of what newspaper it is they are reading. Then i will have the date and price of the newspaper so people are aware how old  it is and how much is going to cost them. 

The main story of my newspaper is going to be about a teenager who wants to tell her side of the storey. Therefore i thought that 'Shocked student set the the record straight' was a good head line because it tells you why the individual is on the front page but it also includes alliteration which makes the story more memorable. For this stories i am going to use a huge picture of the teenager looking Innocent and vulnerable so the readers are more likely to believe her. I am going to do a box on the side with the starting paragraph then telling the individual which page the storey continues.

On the right hand side i am going to my second story about the new building changes at the local secondary school. I am going to get two pictures one of the out side and the other of the inside. I took some practise shots so i could see what they would look like.      



From taking these pictures i now know that it is very easy to take bad quality pictures however it made me realise that my second picture of the stares would not be very interesting therefore i am going to change it to the new study area.  

For the teenager i am going to use my friend Megan because she has a natural look that will fit in with the person needing to look innocent.

I gave Megan soft curls so that it gave her a gentle appearance and decided that we were going to test make up out on a later date. Although she isn't going to have a background behind her this is the type of close up that i am hoping to achieve however Megan will not be looking as happy due to the fact that she has been wrongly accused. So for this shot i am planning to do the size of the shot BCU and have it at eye level so her eye can stand out on the picture.



Page 2

My main story of page 2 is going to be about a launch of a ballet school that has done really well since it opened. This story is included because  it is very local to portishead and it benefits the local community because they have another service in their town. I am going to take a picture of a women who is going to act as the owner looking happy and some children who are going to her classes and enjoying them. The children are going to wear their own individual outfits because the class wouldn't provided outfits therefore they will have to get their own. The shot size i am going to use will be MLS because i want to include the building in the background but also make the individuals large enough to be seen for the readers. For this image i am going to use a slightly low shot which will represent their achievement and their status going up because they will be above the camera. 

Also for this page i am going to do a story about new facts of people not recycling even though the council have provided the bins. I used this story because it is when local because the facts are only going to be on the southwest and local newspaper like to have a environmental issue story.For this  i am going to do an simple picture of a recycling bin with nothing in next to a normal bin overflowing with rubbish.The shot size i am planning to use is CU and i would like to do a slightly high shot so the reader can see in the bins.

The last story i put in because local newspapers always seem to have an on going story were they are providing updates on their second page. Due to this i thought that the police could make a discovery and find the weapon from a murder that was a front page story a few weeks before this issue. For the picture i am going to an area were not many people go so it is believable that it was dumped there. For this image i am going to do the size of the shot LS and make the shot high so people can see the weapon.

The Masthead Of My Newspaper

For media course work i have to produce a local newspaper to the area i live in Porishead. Due to the fact that it will only include information that is relevant to portishead i feel that it is very important to make it clear to individuals that they would only get a select amount of news because if it isn't current to Portishead them it won't be included. To make this clear to people i have decided to Place Portishead in the name so readers are aware that the newspaper is  local.

Once deciding  the first half of the name i believed that individuals need to recognise that this newspaper was going to inform them of events in portishead.

I brainstormed some idea's down and was debating which one to choose.I defiantly new i did not want to use post because that would be my competitors name which could confuse customers. However i could not make mine own choice therefore i did a survey to find out which was the most popular name to go with Portishead.The results from the questionnaire showed one winner that got a third of the votes.  

From my research i found that Press is the most popular name with people in my street and consequently i have decided to use the name for my newspaper. The Portishead Press which i think with the alliteration makes the name have a bit of a rhyme and become more memorable.

THE PORTISHEAD PRESS 

 I have decide that i would like to add a symbol into my name somewhere that represents a bit of Portisheads history it needs to be something that every individual will be aware of so they understand the symbol. To start i have got to do some research into Portisheads history to see what i could use. In the history of Portishead there are three main factors that took a significant change to peoples lives here. 

The first to occur was they developed rapidly in the 19th century in transport infrastructure that allowed the docks to become a fishing port.

Later in the 20th century a power station and chemical works were

added to Portisheads business.It was later expanded and renamed    Portishead A Power Station and Portishead B Power Station opened in the early 1950s. Both power stations were coal-fired however Portishead B Power Station's had one-third of its boilers oil-fired and two thirds coal-fired. Both power stations were later converted to fully oil-fired operation.

Towards the  end of the 20th century they added a telephone control centre used by British telecoms(BT) for non-direct dialled calls to maritime vessels which was know as portishead radio.

 

Before doing the research the only event i was aware of was the power station because there are pictures put up around Portishead with the an image of Portishead with the power station. I did some further research and found a news report of when the power station was demolished in the late 1970s and early 1980s and found that it caused split attitudes through out portishead. Therefore i have chosen to use the power station as my symbol.

 The Symbol

Immediately i wondered how it would be possible to include the power station as my symbol and for the name still to be noticeable. I started by experimenting with some drawing so i could see whether it would be possible without looking to cluttered. I used the picture from earlier to sketch  the power station however i found very quickly that it was going to be a simple drawing other wise there would not be enough room for the writing. In the end i thought i would use to different boilers due to the fact that when it was  demolished there were two side by side.     

 The Portishead power station had two chimney which gave me the idea that they could be used as the P's. After drawing it i added the smoke so they resembled P's more. However i felt that the image of the power station was to large and took over the masthead.

 To resolve my problem of the image being to large i decided to use one chimney for the P of Portishead then the second for the I so it is not as excessive because i want it to look gentle and natural. However this means that the writing has to be on two different levels making it appear informal. 

So to make the writing all on one level i thought i could include a few of the letters into the picture. This did solve the problem of having writting on different levels but created another problem of it made it difficult to see what the title was saying.

Finally, i solved all my problems by moving the image to the end of Portishead and the start of  Press therefore it is not interrupting the words but is still involved. One of the chimneys is part of the d then the P i think this is the best option because the words a clear and the symbol isn't to big but is noticeable.    

I thought that i had placed my symbol in the correct place although when it came to planning my layout i discovered that there is not enough space for a masthead that long. Accordingly i have excluded the word the all together to make it shorter. This gave me enough free space to place the symbol in between the two words which i think looks formal.     

Fonts 

From the research i have done it is clear that the font can change whether the newspaper looks modern or traditional therefore it is important to get the right font. While looking through the fonts i found there was a wide variety and i am unsure of which one to choice so i am going to ask my family.

There is a variety of newspaper fonts however i have found that a large majority of newspapers have their masthead in capital letters,maybe to stand out against their competitors. So for my masthead i am also going to be doing it in capital letter like the other newspapers.    

From the research i had done i found that font number 9 looks like the most traditional newspaper font. With that in mind i am going to use that font.
